Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America

Jerome (Jerry) Blum Elected as New National Commander

Summer 2015

Jerry Blum, of Colchester, CT, has been elected as the National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. He is a life member of the JWV John L. Levitow Post 45.

Jerry graduated from the Albert I. Prince Regional Technical Vocational High School in June 1962 and a week later was on his way to the Great Lakes Naval Station. He attended the Class A Engineman School and upon graduation was assigned to the USS Vance, a Destroyer Escort Radar Picket Ship, out of Pearl Harbor. After several potentially dangerous trips to the North Bering Sea, the Vance was chosen to go to Vietnam. The Vance’s home port then became Subic Bay, Philippines. While aboard the Vance as a Third Class Petty Officer, Jerry had, among other duties, the responsibility of the fresh water distilling operation (the evaps).

Jerry has held numerous JWV positions, including Post Commander, Department Commander, and Department Quartermaster. He also publishes The Shout Out, which is the Department of Connecticut’s newsletter. Jerry continues to serve the National Organization on many committees including The National Board of Inquiry, Hospital Committee, Action/Homeland Security Committee, Credentials/Registration, Resolutions Committee, and the NEC Rules Committee.

Jerry is, like so many of us, also a member of many other veterans service organizations. He belongs to the VVA, the VFW, American Legion, AmVets, The DAV, Connecticut Military Veteran’s Coalition (CVMC), and recently The Antique Veterans – a group dedicated to attending and supplying gun volleys at veterans' funerals. He is also very active at his synagogue, where he served as President and is on the Board of Directors. The Blums are also very involved in the Relay for Life, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society for research towards ‘The Cure.’

Jerry is married to Past National Ladies JWV Auxiliary President, Joanne Blum. They have raised two daughters, and have 3 wonderful grandchildren.

Jerry’s life is filled with volunteerism, but one of the finest honors will be serving JWV as National Commander. His slogan, ‘JOIN WITH JERRY’ means a few things. First it means membership. Membership in our wonderful National Museum of American Jewish Military History needs to be paramount, and of course membership in JWV. ‘JOIN WITH JERRY’ means that all Jewish War Veterans need to feel that they belong together under one umbrella, the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
