JWV Condemns Cold War Use of Sailors As Guinea Pigs

Summer 2007

Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) has condemned the unconscionable actions of the government in testing live biological and chemical agents on US Navy ships and sailors as tests during the "cold war" without a full and complete disclosure to the members of our armed forces being put at risk. The condemnation was issued by JWV National Commander Bernard Becker. The details now becoming available can only horrify those of us who respect and honor those who serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America," Mr. Becker declared. "In this imperfect world, our country will always have enemies out there. But we must be certain that her defenders are never again unknowing or unwilling guinea pigs at the behest of their own leaders. To let something like this happen again could irrevocably stain the relationship between the nation and its defenders. The government must uncover and publicize all the details of what happened in the 1960s, to provide clear rules and regulations needed to avoid it ever happening again." JWV is dedicated to America's veterans. Through its hospital, rehabilitation and veterans' service programs, JWV assists the Veterans' Service Offices in major cities throughout the country. JWV supports the underprivileged, homeless, and handicapped of our nation through a variety of civic betterment projects, including low-cost, federally subsidized senior citizens housing. The Jewish War Veterans of the USA works to combat anti-Semitism and bigotry. JWV supports American youth through scouting, scholarships and anti-drug programs. The organization supports strong U.S.-Israeli relations by sponsoring an Allied Veterans' Missions to Israel each year.
