JWV Strongly Opposes Proposed Arms Sale to Saudi Arabia

September 2010

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) strongly opposes the proposed sale of $60 billion worth of sophisticated aircraft to Saudi Arabia. The deal would be the largest single U.S. arms sale ever and would give Saudi Arabia access to military aircraft with the range to span the Middle East (including Israel) and beyond.

While the deal is predicated on arming Saudi Arabia as a counter-weight in the region to the threat from Iran, such a deal would place the most sophisticated military equipment in the hands of a sworn enemy of Israel. Their oil is not worth peace in the Middle East.

The JWV opposes this proposed sale as it opposed a previous sale in 2008. The reasons for our opposition in 2010 are the same as the reasons for our opposition in the past:

The stability of the Saudi government is shrouded in secrecy, and we have no way of knowing if the components that would keep any nation from being a target can be overridden by those within or outside of the government into whose hands these weapons might fall. It is always important to remember that most of the 9/11 hijackers, as well as Osama bin Laden, came from Saudi Arabia, and much terrorist funding came from the Saudis...

We urge the elimination of this ill-conceived plan. While Iran remains a threat to the stability of the region, arming Saudi Arabia, a country that might allow such weaponry intentionally or unintentionally to fall into the hands of the enemies of both Israel and the United States, is too great a gamble to take.

The Saudi Arabia of 2010 is no less intolerant and anti-Israel than the Saudi Arabia of 2008. Saudi Arabia remains one of the most bigoted and intolerant nations on the face of the earth.

While the threat of a nuclear Iran in the Middle East is real, we cannot permit Israel's sworn enemy, Saudi Arabia, to amass this military equipment. How do we know that these advanced military aircraft will not be used against Israel rather than to contain Iran, especially since the Saudis have funded terrorism as a bribe to forestall threats against the Royal Family?

The Saudis only concern is themselves - not the United States - not Middle East stability - just their greed - their survival - and screw everyone else.
